Whether you
own a marketing agency or work at one, you’ve probably never thought of
including a psychology specialist in your team. And, if you’re a psychologist,
perhaps you never considered the idea of pursuing a career in marketing.
However, there are a number of ways in which these two disciplines merge.
A
psychologist is a specialist in human behavior, and marketing aims at looking
for ways to lead human behavior in a certain direction and drive a target audience
into action.
I’ve always
loved writing and I started experimenting with the creation of emotions in my
readers through poetry. As a little girl I started writing poems, simply expressing
myself without questioning why I wrote a certain thing or why I phrased an idea
in a particular way. As I grew up and learned more about poetry it became a lot clearer to me what I had been doing all along.
I perfected my writing
skills not only by strengthening my grammar, my syntax, my vocabulary... but
specially by dedicating more time and creative effort into analyzing the impact
of a word and the cadence of phrases on the reader’s emotions. Later on, I
became a copywriter and while working on delivering compelling, effective copy
for marketing purposes, I quickly realized I could use a psychological perspective
to make my copy more engaging.
Not only in
copy, but also in designs, and ideas, a marketing or advertising agency might
benefit from the knowledge of a psychologist, as he/she will be able to see
marketing notions from a psychological perspective and provide value by working
with the team of professionals in the agency to evoke a certain emotional response
from the audience.
So yes, the term Marketing Psychologist does have a place in the business, they collaborate in such areas as market research campaigns and product development, or work in solutions to improve user experience, carrying out user research, or analyzing consumer insights.
